How to Spot a Fake Virus Pop-Up — and Exactly What to Do

If a scary message suddenly fills your screen saying your computer has a virus and to call this number right now — take a breath. It's almost certainly a fake, and your computer is probably just fine. Here's how to know, and how to make it go away safely.

The 10-second answer: Real companies never put a phone number on a virus warning. Don't call it. Don't click it. Close the browser (or restart the computer) and you're usually done. Not sure? A quick free scam check with us settles it — no charge, no pressure.

Why these pop-ups are almost always fake

Scammers buy ads and build fake warning pages designed to look like they're from Microsoft, Apple, or your internet company (around here that's usually Spectrum or AT&T). The whole goal is to scare you into calling, so a stranger can talk their way onto your computer or into your wallet. The warning didn't come from your computer at all — it's just a web page pretending.

The red flags — if you see any of these, it's a scam

What to do, step by step

  1. Don't call the number and don't click anything inside the pop-up — not even an "X" or "Close" inside it, which can be fake.
  2. Close the browser tab. If it won't close or fills the screen:
    • Windows: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click your browser (Chrome, Edge), then End task.
    • Mac: press Cmd + Option + Esc, pick your browser, then Force Quit.
  3. Still stuck? Restart the computer. That clears it almost every time.
  4. When the browser opens again, do NOT click "restore previous tabs." That just brings the fake page right back.

Quick questions

Will Microsoft or Apple ever call me about a virus?

No. Microsoft, Apple, and your internet company will never call you out of the blue about a virus, and never put a phone number on a warning. Any warning that gives you a number to call is a scam.

I already called the number — what now?

If you only talked to them, hang up and don't call back. If you let them connect to your computer, turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the internet, then restart. If you gave money or card details, call your bank right away. Then let us make sure your computer is clean.

The pop-up won't close — help!

Try closing the browser tab. If it won't close: Windows — Ctrl+Shift+Esc → pick the browser → End task. Mac — Cmd+Option+Esc → pick the browser → Force Quit. Still stuck? Restart, and don't restore previous tabs.
