Why Is My Computer So Slow? 6 Things to Try

A slow computer is maddening โ€” but the fix is usually simple and free. Before you think about buying a new one, try these six things in order. Most folks are back to normal by step two.

Start here: restart the computer (a full shut-down, then turn it back on). Lots of people leave theirs on for weeks โ€” a restart clears the clutter and fixes slowness more than anything else. Try this first.

The 6 things to try (in order)

  1. Restart it. Fully shut down, wait ten seconds, turn it back on. (Yes, again โ€” it's that effective.)
  2. Close extra browser tabs. Twenty open tabs will bog down any computer. Keep a handful.
  3. Free up space. A nearly-full hard drive gets slow. Empty the Recycle Bin/Trash and clear out old Downloads.
  4. Install updates, then restart again. Pending Windows or Mac updates often cause slowdowns and hang in the background.
  5. Trim start-up programs. Too many programs launching when you turn it on = a slow start. (This one's easy to do wrong โ€” happy to guide you.)
  6. Run a free malware scan. Adware slows things down; a free Malwarebytes scan clears a lot of it.
๐Ÿ’ก Teach-yourself tip: restart once a week and don't keep 40 tabs open. Those two habits prevent most slowdowns from ever coming back.

When it's worth a call

If it's still crawling after all six, there may be a deeper cause โ€” or, if it's an older machine with a spinning hard drive, an SSD upgrade can make it feel brand new for far less than a new computer. We'll take a look remotely and give you an honest answer โ€” fix it, upgrade it, or (rarely) time for a new one. No pressure, no upselling.

Still slow? Let's speed it up together.

A remote tune-up is a flat $45 โ€” we clear the clutter, sort the updates, and check for junk while you watch. If a new machine ever makes more sense, we'll tell you straight and give free buying advice.

Quick questions

What's the #1 fix?

Restart it. Many people leave a computer on for weeks; a full shut-down and restart clears the clutter and fixes slowness more often than anything else. Do that first.

Do I need a new computer?

Usually not. Most slowness is too many open programs, a full drive, or pending updates โ€” all fixable. Only very old machines may be worth upgrading, and we'll tell you honestly first.

Could it be a virus?

Sometimes โ€” adware slows things down; a free Malwarebytes scan helps. But if you also see a pop-up telling you to call a number, that's a scam โ€” don't call it, and get a free check from us.
