How to Video Call Your Grandkids — Made Simple
Seeing their faces shouldn't take a computer degree. Whether the grandkids are across town in Arnold or across the country, here's how to get a video call working — in plain steps, at your pace.
The golden rule: use the app your family already uses. Don't fight to learn a new one — ask the grandkids "what do you video call on?" and use that. Green button answers, red button hangs up. That's most of it.
Pick the app your family is already on
- FaceTime — if everyone has iPhones or iPads. It's already built in.
- Facebook Messenger — great when the family is on Facebook (many are). Works on any phone.
- WhatsApp — common for far-away family; free over Wi-Fi.
- Zoom — best for the whole family at once (holidays, birthdays).
Making the call, step by step
- Get on Wi-Fi if you can — video uses data, and Wi-Fi keeps it smooth and free.
- Open the app and find the person's name (or the family group).
- Tap the little video camera icon 📹 — that starts a video call.
- Hold the phone up at eye level so they see your face, not the ceiling. Prop it against something if your arm gets tired.
- Green answers, red hangs up. That's it — you're talking!
💡 Trouble hearing or being seen? Turn your volume all the way up, make sure you're on the front camera (facing you), and check the app has permission to use your camera and microphone. If it's still fussy, that's a 10-minute fix, not a you-problem.
